Dear Parents,

We are about to begin our 5rd year of AWANA at First Chinese Baptist Church.  AWANA is an acrostic for “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed”.  At FCBC, we are not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.  The entire purpose of AWANA is to bring boys and girls to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ for forgiveness.  Through Christ, eternal forgiveness and salvation is available to all.  We come to know Christ through His Word.  By memorizing God’s Word and hiding it in our hearts, we will be able to stand against the devil when temptations come.  Scripture memory is a vital part of AWANA.  Through Scripture memorization, games and Bible lessons, AWANA provides a well balanced program for every child’s enjoyment.

An exciting year is planned for each club.  It is our goal to see your child through the eyes of Christ, and share His love.  We cannot run a perfect program; however, we serve a perfect Heavenly Father, and He equips us to do our best.

This booklet is provided to inform, educate and guide both parents and Leaders.  Please consult this handbook to familiarize yourself with the FCBC AWANA program.

Great and Mighty is the Lord our God.  May this year bring Him glory and praise.

CLUBS

CUBBIES is the AWANA Club for preschoolers during the two years prior to regular kindergarten (usually 3 and 4 year olds).  Cubbies is a unique because it supports and maintains the parents as the primary source of spiritual nurturing by directly involving them in the teaching-learning process.  Cubbies use fundamental AWANA elements of Bible memorization, handbooks, awards, and activities.  Developmentally appropriate lessons and activities combine basic Bible truths with popular preschool concepts of colors, shapes, numbers and letters.

SPARKS is the AWANA Club for lively kindergartners and 1st and 2nd graders!  Each club session is divided into three segments.  During Green Meadow Time, Sparkies gather for their Bible lesson.  During Sparky Time, Clubbers complete handbook sections.  In Game Time, Sparkies enjoy games played on the AWANA game circle.  Sparky, the friendly firefly, appears throughout the Bible-based materials to encourage Clubbers to complete their handbook achievements.

TRUTH AND TRAINING (T&T) is the AWANA Club 3rd, 4th , and 5th graders!  The Club meeting consists of Council Time, when all Clubbers get together for singing and Bible teaching.  Handbook Time, when children meet in small groups to complete their handbook sections; and Game Time, when games are played on the AWANA Game Circle or outdoors.

CLUB RULES

PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF

Clubbers should not be dropped off prior to 7:15 p.m. unless special arrangements have been made with the specific Club Director.  Clubbers should be escorted to the club room to be checked in.  Parents should not leave children unattended in the hallway.

Clubbers should be picked up promptly at 9:00 p.m. unless special arrangements have been made with the Club Director.  All Clubbers will be picked up from their club rooms.  Also, if Clubbers are to be picked up by someone other than their parents, the Club Director must be notified beforehand.  Clubbers will not be released to siblings or adults other than parents without prior consent.

DISCIPLINE:

Within a group setting, a five count system is used.  The Leader will begin to count to five.  All Clubbers and Leaders should respond by stopping activities and remaining quiet.  The five count is used to restore order within large group settings.

A three count system is used to alert a Clubber of improper behavior.  A Leader will get the attention of the Clubber and begin to count to three.  A “ONE” is simply a warning.  If the improper behavior continues, the Leader will continue the count.  A “TWO” means that Clubber will see the Club Director who may withhold an event that evening.  A “THREE” means the Clubber is taken to the AWANA Commander and the parents are notified.

UNIFORMS

Uniforms are to be purchased.  Clubbers who complete the entrance test for his/her club are eligible to wear the uniform.  A fee payable to the First Chinese Baptist Church is required during registration to cover the cost of the uniform.

All clubbers are expected to wear their uniform - a clubber not wearing his/her uniform will not receive earned awards.

All awards must be placed on the uniform according to handbook guidelines (each handbook shows where to place awards).

Lost Handbooks or Awards must be purchased by the clubber.

An official AWANA Uniform inspection is held twice a year.  “Clubbers meeting uniform guidelines will receive a reward.  Those clubbers that do not meet uniform guidelines will be given a note with explanations and suggestions for changes - if proper changes are made, they will then earn their reward.  However, uniforms are regularly inspected to ensure proper wear of awards.

*GUIDELINES:

-Uniforms clean and buttoned

-Awards properly placed (see your child’s Handbook for placement rules)

HANDBOOKS

Parents are asked to help their child go through the Hanbdbook.  Cubbie parents must sign or initial their child's handbook, indicating what he/she has memorized at home and is ready to say at club.  Parents are not required to sign or initial for Sparks or T&T; however, additional points are awarded to the Clubber if their parents indicated they helped by signing or initialing the specific section.  Please sign or initial only those sections your child is ready to say.

AWARDS

Handbook Sections Awards are given each club night as a clubber earns them (some clubs will have to give the earned award the following week)

Church Attendance Awards are given twice a year to those clubbers meeting Church Attendance requirements (Church Attendance requirement forms are distributed through each club at the beginning of each half year).

Attendance Awards are given to each clubber who attends six club nights.  Four attendance awards may be earned in one year.*  (Cubbies given at 12 weeks, two per year).* T&T club does not give attendance awards.

AWANA  STORE

First Chinese Baptist AWANA seeks to reward each clubber for their hard work and effort put into memorizing Bible verses and passing sections.  Each Clubber (Sparks and older clubs) is awarded tickets redeemable for toys trinkets, and candy at the AWANA Store.  Clubbers are awarded tickets as follows:

Bring Bible                                   1 point (Older Clubs only)

Bring Handbook                            1 point

Wear uniform correctly                  1 point

Wear Tennis Shoes             1 point (for game safety)

Complete handbook sections          1 point per section *

Memorize Verses                          1 point (double if parent initial)

* Different clubs may have additional points for section completion

Once a month, older clubs (T&T) will have a double points night, in which all sections completed earn double points (4 points per memory verse if parents initial).

Several times during the Club year, we will have the AWANA Store stocked and ready for anxious Clubbers, eager to spend their hard earned points.  Each Club keeps a tally of earned points and acts as a bank, for safekeeping.  During the AWANA Store, Clubbers are given their point total, and may redeem their tickets for merchandise, or if they choose, may continue to save their points until the next AWANA Store.

OFFERING

Children will be given the opportunity to bring a weekly offering.  If your child brings an offering (of any amount) he/she will receive a ticket to spend at the AWANA store.  The offering will be used to offset the cost of AWANA.

We would like to thank our Brothers and Sisters at Parkhills Baptist Church for their assistance.  Many portions of this AWANA handbook has been copied from their very thorough and helpful handbook.
